Everyone have their own definition of what art is. And on some level we all are creating works of art. Writing is an art form so is making conversation, sketching, building machines and everything we do that requires knowledge and skill. In short, everything we do in our lives can be considered art. And yes, you can make a living out of anything and everything. It just depends on what art form you choose to pursue and utilize to its fullest potential.
If I had a choice on what kind of art form I would like to do as my living it would fall on sculpting or glassblowing. For those who don’t know what glassblowing is it’s the art of shaping a mass of glass that has been softened by heat by blowing air into it through a tube.
It’s amazing how glassblowers turn molten glass into something tangible. It’s like playing with fire, molding it into anything you want and then freezing it in space. And like every art form glassblowing requires a lot of imagination, skill and patience, maybe even more. Glass is a delicate medium, in every sense of the word. I’m not an expert but I think it requires a steady hand and presence of mind. You really need to know what you’re doing because otherwise everything can blow up in your face, literally. But the rewards of glassblowing are great and the outcome is breathtaking.
In regards to sculpting I’m afraid my interest is not wholly innocent. There’s something very sensual about it. Making something out of nothing with your bare hands is, let’s face it, very intimate. Imagine feeling the surface, every plane and curve as you shape it using your fingertips and watch it unravel before you. It’s living your fantasy, duplicating it in reality; like watching a strip tease. When a sculptor starts to mold his medium he already has a general idea of what it would look like. He envisions it on his mind and let his fingers create it. Its magic, passion, imagination and reality rolled into one. It’s like creating another part of yourself, merging it with something else and preserving it for eternity.
Life is art and we are the medium. We can mold ourselves into anything we want in any way we choose. That’s the beauty of it. You start from nothing and through knowledge, skill and patience you slowly develop into someone unique and special.
